Seasonal Care Tips for Inground Pools

Posted on October 14, 2025 by Steve Solberg.

Owning an inground pool means maintaining it throughout the year. Each season brings different tasks, from opening the pool in spring to preparing it for winter. Staying on top of these tasks helps avoid expensive repairs and keeps the pool clean and safe. Working with inground pool builders guarantees you follow the right steps every season. Proper seasonal care keeps your pool inviting, functional, and free of problems. By staying consistent, your pool will be in great condition year after year.

Preparing Your Pool for Spring

Inspecting and Cleaning the Pool

Start by removing debris from the pool’s surface. Use a skimmer net to clear out leaves, twigs, and other floating debris. Next, scrub the pool walls and floor to remove dirt and stains. Pay attention to areas where dirt can build up, especially in the corners.

Once you’ve scrubbed, use a vacuum to clean the pool bottom. Afterward, clean the pool filter and empty the skimmer basket. This step helps maintain clear water and keeps the system running smoothly, making your pool ready for use.

Checking Equipment and Pumps

Inspect your pool’s equipment before the start of the season. First, check the pump for any blockages or debris. If it’s clogged, clean it to keep it running well. Next, examine the filter to confirm it’s in good condition. If the filter looks damaged, replace it. For pools with heaters, check that they work properly.

Also, look over the plumbing for cracks or leaks. Inspect all the valves and pipes for signs of damage. Finally, check the pool’s timer settings. Proper timing keeps the pool balanced and running efficiently throughout the season.

Summer Pool Maintenance

Cleaning and Skimming the Pool

During the summer, your pool will collect debris from leaves, bugs, and dirt. Cleaning it regularly helps maintain the water’s clarity. Start by using a skimmer net to remove floating debris from the surface. Skim the pool daily to keep it clean. Next, scrub the pool walls and floor to remove any dirt or algae buildup.

Pay attention to corners and steps, where dirt often collects. Vacuum the pool at least once a week to remove debris that sinks to the bottom. Cleaning your pool regularly prevents buildup and keeps the water inviting for swimmers.

Monitoring Water Chemistry

Maintaining proper water chemistry is key to a healthy pool. Test the water regularly using a pool testing kit. You need to check the levels of chlorine, pH, and alkalinity. Chlorine keeps the pool clean and free of bacteria. pH levels should stay between 7.2 and 7.8 for proper chemical balance.

If the pH is off, the water may feel uncomfortable and lead to damage over time. Adjust the chemical levels as needed. Keeping water chemistry balanced prevents algae growth, improves water clarity, and helps protect the pool equipment from damage.

Fall Pool Maintenance

Closing Your Pool for Winter

As the weather cools, it’s time to prepare your pool for winter. Start by cleaning the pool thoroughly. Remove debris, scrub the walls, and vacuum the pool. Next, lower the water level to just below the skimmer. This helps prevent freezing and damage during the winter months. After that, clean the filter and remove any debris from the pump.

Once the pool is clean, cover it with a durable pool cover. This protects the pool from debris and harsh winter weather. Closing your pool correctly prevents damage and makes opening it easier when spring comes.

Winterizing Pool Equipment

Winterizing your pool equipment is vital for protecting it from the cold. Start by turning off all power to the pool equipment. Remove any accessories like ladders or pool cleaners. Next, drain the pump, filter, and heater to prevent water from freezing inside. Use a cover to protect the pool equipment from the winter weather.

If your pool has a saltwater system, drain it and remove all salt from the system. Once everything is drained and cleaned, store any equipment that can be damaged by cold weather. Winterizing your equipment properly helps prevent costly repairs in the spring.

Winter Care for Inground Pools

Protecting the Pool Cover

Check your pool cover often during winter. It should stay secure and tight to keep snow, leaves, and other debris out. If heavy snow or ice builds up, remove it carefully to avoid damage. A durable, weather-resistant cover will protect the pool from dirt and debris.

Inspect the cover for damage or wear. If it’s torn or weak, replace it to prevent problems when reopening the pool. Keeping the cover in good shape will help prevent damage and make your spring opening much easier.

Keeping Water Levels in Check

Monitor the water level in your pool during winter. The water should stay below the skimmer to avoid freezing in the system. If the level is too low, it could damage the pool’s structure. If it’s too high, it can put strain on the cover.

After rain or snowmelt, check the water level. If the water rises too high, pump out some of it. Maintaining the correct water level protects the pool and its equipment. It also makes opening the pool easier when the weather warms, preventing potential issues.

Spring Pool Opening Process

Cleaning the Pool Cover

Start by removing the cover from the pool. Clear away leaves, twigs, and any other debris. If there is water on the cover, use a pump to remove it. After clearing debris, clean the cover with a mild detergent.

Check for any tears or damage. If the cover is in good condition, fold it neatly for storage. Store the cover in a dry area until the next season. Keeping the cover clean helps protect it and makes the process of reopening the pool easier.

Starting Pool Equipment

First, check the pool pump. Remove any debris around it and confirm it runs smoothly. Turn the pump on for a few hours to check for any problems. Inspect the pool filter for dirt or damage. If it needs cleaning or replacing, do that before turning it on.

Check the pool heater and make sure it’s functioning properly. Look for leaks or damage in the pipes and valves. Starting all the equipment and checking for issues early can save you time and help avoid problems during the season.
